September 2024 SIGCOMM Newsletter
1. Call for Site proposals for SIGCOMM'27
The SIGCOMM EC is excited to announce the call for site proposals for SIGCOMM 2027! As we plan for another impactful conference, we invite potential organizers to propose exciting locations and venues. SIGCOMM follows a three-year rotation (North America, Europe, and 'wild card'), so 2027 is "wild-card", so proposals should be outside North America and Europe.
Here's your chance to shape the future of SIGCOMM and showcase your geographic region and its vibrant research ecosystem. Strong proposals should be near a major international airport, within reach of regular train/cab/shuttle service, have a venue to hold and provide Internet connectivity for over 700 attendees. Please submit your proposals by January 15, 2025.
For more details, see: SIGCOMM Site Proposal Instructions.
2. SIGCOMM CARES Call for Nominations

6. A New Proposal for Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives
The SIGCOMM EC has developed a proposal for a new approach we are taking on diversity and inclusion. Building upon last year's discussions and community feedback, we've crafted a plan to allocate resources and efforts strategically. Our goal is to empower students in need and create an inclusive environment in a sustainable manner. Please take a moment to read our proposal and share your thoughts. Your input will help create a more supportive and equitable community.

7. Call for SIGCOMM Ambassadors
The SIGCOMM Executive Committee is thrilled to introduce our new Ambassador program. We are seeking nominations for senior, established researchers who are well-connected within the SIGCOMM community and can effectively reach out to diverse groups, including different geographic regions and minority communities. These ambassadors will play a pivotal role in fostering inclusivity, enhancing communication, and promoting collaboration across our diverse community. Additionally, they will help SIGCOMM understand the unique needs of these groups and provide valuable insights on how we can improve our processes to better serve our community. If you know someone who exemplifies these qualities and is passionate about advancing the SIGCOMM mission, we encourage you to nominate them for this esteemed role by contacting caesar@illinois.edu with the person's name and contact information and a brief comment on why you feel this person would be a good match with the role (self-nominations are also encouraged).

10. SIGCOMM ELECTIONS - CALL FOR NOMINATIONS
SIGCOMM will soon be holding elections for new officers. A single term lasts 2 years, though elected officers typically stay on for two consecutive terms. This is not required, but is permitted by the SIG’s bylaws, and has been common in the past, if only because implementing new initiatives often takes more than one term. Our next cycle’s term runs from August 2025 to August 2027 (and possibly August 2029, if desired).
To hold elections, we need candidates! We are, therefore, soliciting nominations (including self-nominations) for all positions. If you are interested in nominating yourself or someone else (with their permission), please fill out this nomination form no later than November 17, 2024.
Here are the open positions along with brief descriptions of duties:
Chair: oversees the activities of the SIG and acts as liaison with SIGCOMM’s leadership and other SIGs.
Vice Chair: assists the SIG Chair in fulfilling their duties
Treasurer: manages and reports on SIG financial accounts, approves any expenditures.
Getting involved as a SIG officer is a great way to contribute to our community and provide professional service at the international level. The positions' responsibilities require time and effort, but are doable. They offer a meaningful opportunity to improve our community while having high impact as we are in an exciting time of change as we rethink our conference models and enhance diversity initiatives. If you have questions or are interested in learning more about any of the positions, please feel free to reach out to any of the current SIG officers. You can also read more about the official responsibilities of each position in our SIG bylaws.
The #elections channel was created for follow-on and postings relevant to the upcoming SIGCOMM elections. Feel free to use it to post questions or contribute your thoughts on this upcoming SIG election.
Finally, ACM’s policy and procedures governing SIGs’ elections are accessible here. Note that, as per ACM’s rules, candidates for SIG offices must be members of the SIG and Professional Members of ACM. Selected candidates will subsequently be contacted by ACM and asked to provide a biographical sketch form, limited to 200 words. The form is intended to serve as a platform statement and include biographical information.
