SIGCOMM is a not-for profit entity formed for the purpose of providing services to support and help students and researchers across the world who are interested in computer networking. Because of this, the SIG has held a long-standing policy of making almost all of its services open to the community regardless of membership status.
So why would you want to join SIGCOMM?
We can think of a few reasons:
It helps us keep in touch with you. When you join, ACM will automatically put you in our membership database, which we use to send communications about our various events and new services we provide. The SIG also values the inclusion of everyone in our events regardless of who you are. Your enrollment provides us (and ACM) statistics so we can make sure everyone is being included and served equally.
It helps us with funding. Our SIG runs on (and is incredibly appreciative of) the many volunteers who dediate their time to support and help others in our community. No funding we get from sponsors, or you, go to any of the professors or researchers you see running our events, they are there because they care about helping others. Still, we need funding to provide students with travel grants and other fundamental costs from our services. There is a small charge to join the SIG (even smaller for students), which we use the entirety of in support of our services.
Member services. We can directly provide you with services such as:
Monthly e-mail digest with mini-editorials, announcements, and lists of SIGCOMM-related conferences
Discounted registration rate for all SIGCOMM sponsored/co-sponsored conferences and workshops, and "in cooperation with" events
Suppport for special workshops or activities initiated by members, SIGCOMM Communities, or local SIGCOMM Chapters
Voting rights in ACM SIGCOMM Elections
Preferred access to travel grants for student members
The members of SIGCOMM are active in the development of new computer communication technologies and techniques. Participation in this community will provide you with access to current thinking and research and an opportunity to contribute to an ongoing discussion about the role of computers in communications and the role of communications in computing. You can find ACM membership statistics here.
How to join: Please join via this link. To become a member of our parent organization (ACM), electronic enrollment is available as well. If you need a paper form, you can find them for professionals here, and for students here.
