    ●     Experience with mobile applications, networks and systems
    ●     Innovative mobile, mobile sensing, and mobile crowdsourcing applications
    ●     Tools for building and measuring mobile systems
    ●     Innovative wearable or mobile devices
    ●     Novel software architectures for mobile devices
    ●     Data management for mobile applications
    ●     Infrastructure support for mobile computing
    ●     System-level energy management for mobile devices
    ●     Operating systems for mobile devices
    ●     Support for mobile social networking and mobile Web
    ●     Security and privacy in mobile systems
    ●     Resource-efficient machine learning for mobile platforms
    ●     Systems for location and context sensing and awareness

Papers whose contributions overlap with work currently under review elsewhere must not be submitted to MobiSys. Papers whose contributions overlap with an earlier published paper will be considered only if (1) the previous paper was published (not just accepted) at a workshop at least 6 months before our submission date and (2) it adds significant new contributions over the previous paper. Authors uncertain whether their submission meets these guidelines should contact the program chairs. Papers accompanied by nondisclosure agreement forms will not be considered. Accepted submissions will be treated as confidential prior to publication; rejected submissions will be permanently treated as confidential.

MobiSys uses a double-blind review policy during the initial paper review. Authors are instructed to not include their names, affiliations and contact information on the manuscript they submit for review. Authors should also anonymize the content of their paper to hide their identity. Reviewers will not know the identity of the authors during the initial phase of the review process, however, anonymity will expire after the majority of the reviews have been submitted and preliminary outcomes decided. The identities of the authors will be revealed to the reviewers toward the end of the review process. Submissions who are not properly anonymized will be rejected without being reviewed.

We strongly encourage prospective authors to use past MobiSys proceedings as a guideline to assess the readiness of their work for submission. Due to high review load on PC members, low quality or premature work submitted to the conference is likely to receive a smaller number of reviews and the reviews may be brief.

As part of the submission process, authors of papers that describe experiments on human subjects, or that analyze nonpublic data derived from human subjects (even anonymized data), will be asked to certify that their work was vetted by an ethics review (e.g., IRB approval). We expect authors to follow the rules of their host institutions around data collection and experiments with human subjects.

Selected outstanding papers may be fast-tracked as a special section of IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing.

Best Paper Award All papers will be considered for the Best Paper Award. The program committee will select a number of candidates for the award among accepted papers, and select one or more award papers prior to the conference.

Video Presentation The authors of each accepted paper will submit a 1-minute video that presents their papers' contributions to a general audience. These videos will be placed on the conference website before the conference and may be played during the conference. Some of the videos will be featured on the social media channels related to the conference.

ACM IMC 2019: Call for Site Proposals

The ACM IMC Steering Committee (IMC SC) is soliciting site proposals for the 2019 conference.

Please provide information as per the outline below. Depending on the pool of submitted proposals, the selection process will proceed in several “rounds,” with each round asking additional information and narrowing the set of candidates. This document focuses on what
is expected in an initial proposal.

Site proposals should be less than 2 pages and should provide the following information:

    - Site city: Locations generally alternate between North America and the rest of the world. Our initial preference for 2019 is therefore outside of North America.  However, depending on the submitted proposals the IMC SC may alter this rotation. See below for site city guidelines.

    - Conference General Chair & organizing committee: A proposal is generally made by the proposed conference general chair(s). IMC conferences typically rely on a team of two general chairs, both of whom should be recognized members of the data networking community. One of the chairs must be local to the site where the conference will be held. For this chair, a statement of support from their home institution and possibly administrative support, may eventually be required.

A proposal should also include a partial list of committee members that will play a role in organizing the conference. The PC chairs are NOT part of a proposal, as they are selected separately by the IMC SC.

    - Potential dates: IMC is generally held during one of the last two weeks of October or the first two weeks of November. The exact dates will be selected by the IMC SC in consultation with the general chairs, program chairs, and the broader community. Proposals should indicate dates that may have major local conflicts, e.g., important local events, school holidays, etc., that would interfere with either the proposed site, hotel availability, travel costs, or the general chairs' participation.

    Site city guidelines

      1. The city should be located near a major international airport, within 1-2 hours of regular train service and/or 45 minutes of cab/shuttle service. A major international airport should have at least two airlines with regular international service to the 4 major continents of IMC attendees: Asia, Europe, North and South America.

      2. The city should have one or more venues for ~200 attendees, including side-venues for any concurrent workshops of less than 100. (IMC has occasionally one or two workshops a day prior to the main conference.) Each venue should support one or two large screens with unobstructed views.  Auditorium room layout is preferred. The venues should also include ample space outside the conference room, to facilitate interactions among attendees. This space should be able to accommodate food and beverages for coffee breaks. In addition, it should be able to hold 30-40 student poster displays (either hanging on the walls or supported on easels) that would ideally remain for the entire duration of the conference (in order to give
students several opportunities to attract an audience for their work).

      3. Facilities capable of serving lunch for up to 200 attendees should also be available in reasonable proximity to the conference room(s).

      4. The city should have hotels supporting ~300 people (attendees and their guests) within easy access to the possible venue (less than 15 minutes time, preferably within walking distance or at most 1 bus/subway/tram stop).

      5. The city should have potential venues for a reception and banquet dinner. A sample list of possible venues with a 1-line description addressing logistics (time to get there, need for transportation) would be useful. Transportation to these events should be less than 30 minutes each way.

For items 2-4, what is required is general information, not necessarily a detailed financial proposal with specific venues already identified. There is no a priori preference for a university
location, even if they often offer more affordable solutions. Convention center or hotel venues, when they provide an economical solution, are perfectly valid options.  Submission
    instructions

Send proposals to ACM-IMC-SC@listserv.acm.org before December 31 2018. If you do not get an acknowledgment within a week of your submission, you should inquire with the IMC SC.

    SIGCOMM 2019 Call for Papers

The ACM SIGCOMM 2019 conference seeks papers making significant research contributions to the field of data communication networks and networked systems. The conference takes a broad view of networking research, which includes new ideas relating (but not limited) to :

    -   Different network types, layers, and devices:
        - Wide-area, data-center, home, enterprise
        - Sensors and Internet of Things
        - Network access in remote or under-served areas
        - Wireless and mobility
        - Routers, middleboxes, network functions, end-host network stacks
        - Link and transport layers
        - Applications, including distributed systems and social networks
        - Virtual networks and SDNs
        - Future network architectures: clean slate and evolution
    -   Aspects and properties of networks:
        - Correctness and performance
        - Security and privacy
        - Fault tolerance
        - Energy consumption
        - Usability
        - Emergent properties
        - Management
        - Resource allocation, provisioning and planning
        - Economics
        - Topology
    -   Different evaluation methods:
        - Theory
        - Experiments
        - Measurement
        - Deployment and experience

We expect submissions to be daring and emphasize novelty and creativity. We recognize that more novel concepts can be harder to fully develop and evaluate, and the review process will take this into account. We encourage authors to discuss the limitations of their ideas in addition
    to the benefits.

Unlike some previous years, SIGCOMM 2019 will not have a separate experience track. However, we do encourage the submission of experience papers, particularly from industry, that provide detailed technical insight into real-world deployments of novel networking technologies and systems.

In addition to the main conference, SIGCOMM 2019 will have a series of co-located workshops, tutorials, poster and demo sessions, a travel grant program, and conference best paper and SIGCOMM awards.

For more information about SIGCOMM 2019, please see https://conferences.sigcomm.org/sigcomm/2019/

    Submissions
Submissions should report novel results that are supported by experimentation, deployment, simulation, or analysis. Submissions must be in 2-column, 10-point format and can be up to 12 pages long, with as many additional pages as necessary for references.

New in 2019: Submissions and final papers may include appendices (following references, also not counting against the 12 pages). Appendices will not be considered in reviews, so we caution authors to ensure that the core paper is complete and self-contained. (For example, if the appendix provides details of a proof or experiment, the body should summarize the key result.) For accepted papers, the shepherd will review appendices and must approve their need. Appendices may also include non-traditional material, such as videos, datasets, code, etc.

Detailed submission instructions, including sample templates, can be found at https://conferences.sigcomm.org/sigcomm/2019/submission.html.

    Ethical Concerns
New in 2019: All papers must include, in the main body of the paper, a statement about ethical issues. This could be simply the sentence "This work does not raise any ethical issues." If the work involves human subjects or any potentially sensitive data (e.g., user traffic or social network information, evaluation of censorship, etc), the paper should clearly discuss these issues, perhaps in a separate subsection.

Papers must follow basic precepts of ethical research and subscribe to community norms. These include: respect for privacy, secure storage of sensitive data, voluntary and informed consent if users are placed at risk, avoiding deceptive practices when not essential, beneficence
(maximizing the benefits to an individual or to society while minimizing potential harms to an individual), and risk mitigation. Authors may want to consult the Menlo Report for further information on ethical principles, and they may find the Allman/Paxson paper in IMC 2007 helpful for a perspective on ethical data sharing.

Many organizations have an ethics review process (sometimes called an Institutional Research Board, IRB). In some cases, research work may clearly have no human subjects, and formal institutional review may not be required. (However, a sentence in the paper stating this evaluation is still required.) In many cases, IRB involvement is appropriate. IRB approval of research is an important factor (and should be mentioned), but the TPC will still evaluate ethical soundness of the work, just as they evaluate technical soundness.

If there are questions about the ethics process, please contact the program committee co-chairs. The PC takes a broad view of what constitutes an ethical concern, and the TPC chairs may reach out to authors during the review process if questions arise.

    Research Reproducibility
ACM is promoting research reproducibility by encouraging papers to document the artifacts needed for others to reproduce their work. ACM has details at https://www.acm.org/publications/policies/artifact-review-badging. They will award accepted papers a "reproducibility badge" if the paper provides pointers to public code and other information as described at the above link. Authors who wish to participate in this process should document such information in an appendix to the paper. Information about reproducibility is not required at paper submission, but is required at camera ready. As an appendix, it will need to be provided to the shepherd with adequate time for review. While we encourage authors to
participate, formal participation is not a factor in SIGCOMM reviewing.

    Evaluation of paper artifacts
A growing fraction of the papers accepted at SIGCOMM conferences and workshops include artifacts such as datasets and software that complement papers. ACM has defined ACM reproducibility badges that can be associated to papers published in the digital library. An artifact evaluation committee has been created to evaluate these artifacts and assign the ACM reproducibility badges. The authors of papers that are at least six-pages long and have been accepted/presented at any SIGCOMM-sponsored conference or workshop during 2018 are encouraged to submit the accepted paper with links to the associated artifacts for evaluation. These artifacts must be submitted before October 15th, 2018 on

    SIGCOMM Artifacts evaluation
A growing fraction of the papers accepted by Computer Communication Review and the SIGCOMM-sponsored conferences includes artifacts such as simulation models, measurement datasets, software implementations, etc. These artifacts are an essential part of many of these papers, and artifacts’ availability encourages other researchers to build upon and extend previous results. The ACM SIGCOMM community showed to be sensible to artifacts availability and research reproducibility, as proven by the ACM SIGCOMM Reproducibility Workshop. Also, a survey conducted among the authors of the accepted papers at SIGCOMM’17, CoNext’17, IMC’17, and ICN’17 revealed that a significant fraction of the accepted papers contained artifacts.

SIGCOMM is setting up an artifacts evaluation committee that will evaluate the artifacts of the papers accepted in 2018 at SIGCOMM-sponsored conferences, workshops and in CCR. This evaluation will assign ACM reproducibility badges to the participating papers and a summary will be published in CCR. We seek volunteers who have experience in releasing or using paper artifacts to participate in this evaluation. If you would like to volunteer to be considered to serve on the Artifact Evaluation Committee, please complete this form. You can also contact Olivier Bonaventure if you have specific questions.

    SIGCOMM Artifacts Evaluation Committee
A growing fraction of the papers accepted by Computer Communication Review and the SIGCOMM-sponsored conferences includes artifacts such as simulation models, measurement datasets, software implementations, etc. These artifacts are an essential part of many of these papers, and artifacts’ availability encourages other researchers to build upon and extend previous results. ACM has created a badging system to assess the quality of these artifacts and ACM SIGCOMM will create a SIGCOMM Artifact Evaluation Committee that will organise this fall an evaluation of the artifacts released for the papers published in CCR and presented at the SIGCOMM-sponsored conferences and workshops during 2017. Additional information about this evaluation will be available at SIGCOMM’18 and more details will be provided in the next issue of this newsletter.

SIGCOMM 2018 Initiative against harassment and discrimination
The SIGCOMM EC has been studying the implementation of a committee against discrimination and harassment, following the steps of SIGARCH and its initiative, CARES (Committee to Aid REporting on discrimination and haraSsment policy violations). The upcoming conference in Budapest will have an ad-hoc committee, led by Ellen Zegura, to serve as a resource for attendees who have been subject to discrimination or harassment during the conference.

July 2018 issue of SIGCOMM’s Computer Communication Review

The July 2018 issue of CCR is available online at https://ccronline.sigcomm.org. It contains three technical articles (Accelerating Network Measurement in Software, Looking for Hypergiants in PeeringDB and  Practical Challenge-Response for DNS ) and three editorial contributions (Mosaic5G: Agile and Flexible Service Platforms for 5G Research, NDN Host Model and  Workshop on Internet Economics (WIE2017) Final Report ).

Call for Papers: CoNEXT EPIQ workshop
    https://conferences2.sigcomm.org/co-next/2018/#!/workshop-epiq
The transport protocol QUIC has emerged from a proprietary effort undertaken by Google to a next generation transport protocol being standardized in the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). While its original motivation and design was to support next-generation Web traffic using HTTP/2, embedding QUIC into the Internet architecture raises exciting challenges beyond the necessary engineering efforts. Google QUIC has seen deployment and motivated research papers measuring, extending, and evaluating QUIC from various perspectives.

The ACM CoNEXT Workshop on the Evolution, Performance, and Interoperability of QUIC (EPIQ) seeks to foster this emerging community. We invite researchers from academia and industry as well as engineers to explore novel ideas and future directions of QUIC and its interaction with applications and networks.

EPIQ solicits two types of submissions, for presentation and discussion at the workshop: academic papers and posters & demos. Submissions of both types should focus on topics related to the rise of QUIC on the mobile and fixed Internet as well as enterprise and datacenter networks. Papers focusing on either the original flavor of QUIC currently deployed by Google or the upcoming IETF standard of QUIC are in scope. We encourage submissions of demos supporting growing a community, e.g., about tools for protocol testing, deployment, and performance evaluation, among others. Open source tools are preferred.

We encourage the submission of early results, negative results, and independently reproduced results of previously published work.

Call for Papers: SIGCOMM’s Computer Communication Review (CCR)

CCR accepts three types of submissions: short technical papers, repeatable technical papers and editorial notes. Short technical papers are carefully prepared presentations of technical material. The length of the paper is strictly limited to 6 pages (including references). Repeatable technical papers are carefully prepared presentations of technical material. The authors also submit the artifacts (software, datasets, …) that are necessary to repeat the key results described in the paper. The length of the paper is not limited but authors are encouraged to submit concise papers. Editorial notes are typically shorter and less formal presentations on topics of broad interest to the research community. They are not peer-reviewed. Authors considering submission of an editorial contribution are welcome to contact the Editor for feedback about its appropriateness, if desired.

Additional information about CCR are available on: https://ccronline.sigcomm.org
Submitted papers are processed in batch by the editors. The next submission deadline is September 1st, 2018

Call for Poster/Demo: The ACM Conference on Embedded Networked Sensor Systems (SenSys 2018)
    http://sensys.acm.org/2018/

SenSys 2018 solicits submissions of poster and demo abstracts reflecting on-going research progress and/or demonstrating working prototypes. We welcome submissions in broadly defined areas of interests (but not limited to): systems of smart sensors and actuators, brand-new applications of sensory devices, smart things, and smart infrastructure, and the underlying research challenges in communication, networking, energy and resources, data management, algorithms and machine intelligence, hardware designs, and deployment on real environments.

Student participants will greatly benefit from the Posters and Demos session; it will be a lively forum to present their work and receive early feedback from international leading experts attending the conference. We explicitly encourage submissions of revolutionary concepts, path-breaking ideas, and ongoing research prototypes.

Major IT industry, as well as emerging technology startups, are also highly encouraged to participate. SenSys is an ideal venue to present brand-new products, early prototypes, new development platforms, or even ongoing crowdfunding projects of smart platforms and solutions that might catalyze future applications and/or disrupt today’s sensing and networking technologies.

Submitted abstracts will be evaluated based on technical merit and innovation as well as their potential to stimulate interesting discussions and exchange of ideas. Authors of accepted abstracts will be given a one-minute slot in a “madness session” during the conference to present their work in front of the conference audience. As with previous editions of SenSys, the best poster and demo will receive an award.

Call for Papers, Posters and Demos: Second ACM Workshop on the Internet of Safe Things
    https://www.safethings.info/
    Co-located with Sensys

The Internet of Safe Things workshop (or SafeThings, for brevity) seeks to bring researchers and practitioners that are actively exploring system design, modeling, verification, authentication approaches to provide safety guarantees in the Internet of Things (IoT). The workshop welcomes contributions that integrate hardware and software systems provided by disparate vendors, particularly those that have humans in the loop. As safety is inherently linked with the security and privacy, we welcome contributions that address safety concerns in these areas as well. With the SafeThings workshop, we seek to develop a community that systematically dissects the vulnerabilities and risks exposed by these emerging CPSes, and create tools, algorithms, frameworks and systems that help in the development of safe systems.

Call for Papers: First International Workshop on Data: Acquisition To Analysis
    **** Part of SenSys 2018 ****
    https://workshopdata.github.io/DATA2018/

Sensor systems are proliferating in many parts of research such as Internet of Things (IoT) and Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS). This proliferation has led to an explosion of activity in many applications that cover a multitude of areas. As these research progresses, sharing of data has become a frequent bottle neck in showing repeatability and allowing follow up research from the community.

The Data: Acquisition To Analysis (DATA) workshop aims to solicit datasets and tools from past and current sensor deployments and data gathering efforts. The workshop aims to bring together the community of application researchers, and algorithm researchers in the sensing systems domain to promote breakthroughs from the integration of the communities. The workshop will foster cross-domain understanding by enabling both the understanding of algorithmic needs and data collection limitations.

The workshop seeks contributions describing original datasets in all topics related to the sensor networks, IoT and CPS. Topics of interests include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Shopping-related sensing data
    • Animal-related data or sensing data
    • Anonymized health, or synthetic health-related data

    SIGCOMM 2018 Call for Participation
July 14 is the early registration deadline of ACM SIGCOMM 2018: http://conferences.sigcomm.org/sigcomm/2018/registration.html. Coming to Eastern Europe for the first time ever, the flagship annual conference of the ACM Special Interest Group on Data Communication takes place in Budapest on August 20-25.

SIGCOMM 2018 is traditionally centered on an excellent main-conference program, which consists of 40 papers in network congestion control, routing, data center networking, IoT, wireless technologies, applications, hardware support, SDN, verification, and measurements: http://conferences.sigcomm.org/sigcomm/2018/program.html. Jennifer Rexford, the recipient of the SIGCOMM 2018 Award for Lifetime Contribution, delivers the conference keynote. A number of diverse events run in parallel with the main conference and include posters and demos, student research competition, industrial demos, topic previews, and mentoring sessions.

Tutorials and workshops explore network programming, virtualization, machine learning and big data analytics, security and privacy, and other topics of a high current interest in networking research. One special symposium consists exclusively of invited talks by ERC grant holders in the areas of networking and distributed systems. An inaugural SIGCOMM hackathon concludes the conference on August 25.

Complementing its technical excellence, SIGCOMM 2018 benefits from its superb location in the heart of Budapest with stunning views from the Pest embankment to Buda hills across the Danube. Famous for its Hungarian cuisine and wines, Budapest is a naturally beautiful, culturally sophisticated, and technologically advanced European city. The SIGCOMM 2018 main conference and its parallel events meet in Vigadó, a legendary concert hall. The diverse SIGCOMM 2018 social events start with a welcome reception that coincides with the spectacular fireworks held on the Danube to celebrate a major national holiday of Hungary.

An attendee of SIGCOMM 2018 main conference may register for a workshop at a discounted fee of $100. Participants who register for a Monday or Friday workshop or tutorial may freely attend another workshop on the same day. To benefit from early registration rates, remember to register for ACM SIGCOMM 2018 by July 14 at http://conferences.sigcomm.org/sigcomm/2018/registration.html.

Call for site proposals for CoNEXT 2019
The CoNEXT Steering Committee is soliciting proposals for hosting CoNEXT 2019, which will be held in North America. Please see here for details on CoNEXT and instructions for site proposals. Information about the conference and the format of site proposals can be found on the web:

    http://sigcomm.org/events/conext-conference
    http://www.sigcomm.org/events/conext-conference/site-proposals

The deadline for full site proposals is October 15, 2018, but proposers are encouraged to let the steering committee know about their intent to propose earlier.  Please e-mail site proposals, intent to propose, and questions to the SC Chair, Peter Steenkiste (prs@cs.cmu.edu).

Call for Nominations for SIGCOMM 2018 Rising Star Award
Each year, ACM SIGCOMM will present a "Rising Star" Award, recognizing a young researcher - an individual within 10 years of receiving their highest university degree - who has made outstanding research contributions to the field of communication networks during this early part of her or his career.  Depth, impact, and novelty of the researcher's contributions will be key criteria upon which the Rising Star award committee will evaluate the nominees. Also of particular interest are strong research contributions made independently from the nominee's PhD advisor.

The award will be presented at the annual ACM CoNEXT conference, where the award-winner will deliver a keynote address.   Conference registration, travel, and lodging for the awardee will be paid by ACM SIGCOMM.

Nominations for SIGCOMM Rising Star Award: July 15th

Call for Papers for HotNets 2018
HotNets 2018: Seventeenth ACM Workshop on Hot Topics in Networks, November 13-November 14, 2018 — Redmond, Washington, USA
    https://conferences.sigcomm.org/hotnets/2018/cfp.html

The 17th ACM Workshop on Hot Topics in Networks (HotNets 2018) will bring together researchers in computer networks and systems to engage in a lively debate on the theory and practice of computer networking. HotNets provides a venue for discussing innovative ideas and for debating future research agendas in networking.

We invite researchers and practitioners to submit short position papers. We encourage papers that identify fundamental open questions, advocate a new approach, offer a constructive critique of the state of networking research, re-frame or debunk existing work, report unexpected early results from a deployment, report on promising but unproven ideas, or propose new evaluation methods. Novel ideas need not be supported by full evaluations; well-reasoned arguments or preliminary evaluations can support the possibility of the paper’s claims.

We seek early-stage work, where the authors can benefit from community feedback. An ideal submission has the potential to open a line of inquiry for the community that results in multiple conference papers in related venues (SIGCOMM, SOSP, OSDI, NSDI, MobiCom, MobiSys, CoNEXT, etc.), rather than a single follow-on conference paper. The program committee will explicitly favor early work and papers likely to stimulate reflection and discussion over “conference papers in miniature”. Finished work that fits in a short paper is likely a better fit with the short-paper tracks at either CoNEXT or IMC.

HotNets takes a broad view of networking research. This includes new ideas relating to (but not limited to) mobile, wide-area, data-center, home, and enterprise networks using a variety of link technologies (wired, wireless, visual, and acoustic), as well as social networks and network architecture. It encompasses all aspects of networks, including (but not limited to) packet-processing hardware and software, virtualization, mobility, provisioning and resource management, performance, energy consumption, topology, robustness and security, measurement, diagnosis, verification, privacy, economics and evolution, interactions with applications, and usability of underlying networking technologies.

Position papers will be selected based on originality, likelihood of stimulating insightful discussion at the workshop, and technical merit. Accepted papers will be posted online prior to the workshop and will be published in the ACM Digital Library to facilitate wide dissemination of the ideas discussed at the workshop.

Toward facilitating reflective discussion within the networking research community, HotNets 2018 will continue the HotNets Dialogues: give-and-take written discussions of a selection of accepted papers, each between a pair of program committee members, that will be posted on the HotNets web site shortly before the workshop.

Call for Nominations: SIGCOMM Rising Star Award
Each year, ACM SIGCOMM presents a "Rising Star" Award, recognizing a young researcher - an individual within 10 years from receiving their highest university degree - who has made outstanding research contributions to the field of communication networks during this early part of his or her career. Depth, impact, and novelty of the researcher's contributions will be key criteria upon which the Rising Star award committee evaluate the nominees. Also of particular interest are strong research contributions made independently from the nominee's PhD advisor.

Nominations for the ACM SIGCOMM Rising Star award are due on July 15. Please see the following link for eligibility criteria, nomination guidelines, and the deadline. https://www.sigcomm.org/awards/sigcomm-rising-star-award

Call for applications, ACM IMC Shadow TPC
This year there is going to be an ACM IMC Shadow TPC! The Shadow PC will consist of PhD students, postdocs, early-career academics, and junior researchers. The goal is to provide an educational experience by exposing shadow TPC members to a review process and to subsequently train the next generation of program committee (PC) members.

Interested to join? Please apply until June 8, 2018, or forward to your students! All details: https://conferences.sigcomm.org/imc/2018/shadow/

We're also going to try something new this year! We plan to use the Shadow PC as a means to experiment with new approaches to managing the TPC decision process. We will implement an
A/B experiment to compare the experience of in-person vs. remote meetings. As part of this, the IMC Shadow PC will be split in two groups. (i) Those who will attend an in-person Shadow PC meeting, held at the end of July in Berlin; (ii) Those who will attend an online meeting via professional video conferencing distributed among two or more remote sites, also held at the end of July. Every participant needs to decide up front which group he or she would like to join. We assume that members based in Europe can travel easier and expect from them to
    attend the one-day in-person meeting.

The outcomes of these two meetings will be recorded and compared, and used to inform possible SIGCOMM’s experiments with future PC meetings.

Call for Papers: 16th USENIX Symposium on Networked Systems Design and Implementation

The Call for Papers for the 16th USENIX Symposium on Networked Systems Design and Implementation is now available! NSDI '19 will take place February 25–28, 2019, in Boston, MA, USA.

NSDI focuses on the design principles, implementation, and practical evaluation of networked and distributed systems. This year, we're making two major changes: we're offering two submission deadlines, and we're providing the possibility of getting one-shot-revision decisions in lieu of rejection.

The Spring deadline to submit your paper titles and abstracts is Thursday, May 24, 2018. The Fall deadline will be in September. Please view the complete Call for Papers for all the details and submission instructions.

Call for Papers: HotNets 2018: Seventeenth ACM Workshop on Hot Topics in Networks
    November 8-November 9, 2018 — Redmond, Washington, USA

SIGCOMM 2018 networking systems award nominations due on March 31st 2018

Due to delays in announcing the deadline for nominations for the networking systems award, we have extended the submission deadline to March 31st 2018.
    Overview
The SIGCOMM Networking Systems Award is awarded to an institution or individual(s) to recognize the development of a networking system that has had a significant impact on the world of computer networking. The impact may be reflected in the wide-spread adoption of the system or its underlying concepts by the wider networking community either in research projects, in the open-source community, or commercially.
The award includes a prize of $2,500 (to be shared among the recipients) and plaque(s) for the recipient(s).
Relationship to ACM Software Systems Award
This differs in scope from the ACM Software System Award as it targets only networking systems, and is not restricted only to software. Networking systems may be realized as software, hardware, or a combination of both. Some recipients of the SIGCOMM Networking Systems award may be eligible
for the ACM Software Systems Award. However, systems that have received the ACM Software Systems Award in the past will not be considered for the SIGCOMM Networking Systems Award.
    Selection Committee
The chair of the selection committee is a member of SIGCOMM appointed by the SIGCOMM awards chair. Other committee members are selected by the chair of the selection committee with approval of the SIGCOMM awards chair. The SIGCOMM awards Chair shall adjudicate conflicts of interest, appointing substitutes to the committee as necessary. The committee will have a minimum of three members.
    Nominations
Nominations may be submitted at any time to the SIGCOMM awards chair. Nominations submitted by January 31st will be considered for that year's award, which will be announced at the annual SIGCOMM conference. Self-nominations (individual or institutional) will not be accepted. A nomination for the award that is not selected will remain under consideration for 2 additional years.
Each nomination should consist of the following items:

    1. Name, address, phone number, and email address of the person making the nomination (the nominator).
    2. Name, address, phone number, and email address of the candidates for whom an award is recommended (the nominees). If the nominee is an institution: name, address, and URL for the institution.
    3. A short statement (200-500 words) that includes a brief description of the system, and a description of the impact that the system has had. Furthermore, the nomination should contain references that describe the system (e.g., papers or web pages for downloading the system and additional material) and, if possible, references to adoptions of the system.
    4. Names and email addresses of 5-10 people whom the nominator believes will support the nomination. The awards committee will solicit input from some or all of these individuals and from other sources as they deem necessary.

    Publicity
Ongoing publicity would be the same as for other SIGCOMM awards. A call for nominations will be sent to SIGCOMM members, mailing lists and social media channels in advance of the deadline. The announcement of the award should receive special publicity in the monthly email to SIGCOMM members and at the SIGCOMM conference.

Applied Networking Research Workshop 2018, Call for Papers
The ACM, IRTF & ISOC Applied Networking Research Workshop 2018 (ANRW’18) is an academic workshop that provides a forum for researchers, vendors, network operators, and the Internet standards community to present and discuss emerging results in applied networking research. Our other goal is to create a path for academics to transition research back into the IETF standards and protocols and for academics to find inspiration from topics and open problems addressed at the IETF. We are particularly interested in topics that focus on wide-area networks and network security, but applied networking topics outside of these focus areas (see below) are also welcome.

The conference will consist of a mix of invited talks, submitted talks, and submitted short papers. Invited talks, covering topics including BGP security, TCP congestion control, self-running networks and optical networking have already been announced on the ANRW website.

    • Submitted talks are not-for-publication resubmissions of works that have been published elsewhere during the last 12 months. For a talk to be considered for presentation, please submit an extended abstract that is no longer than 2 pages.
    • Short papers are publications that present new research that has not been previously published. For a short paper to be considered for publication, please submit work describing early/emerging results in a relevant topic area. There is a 6-page limit for short papers.

The ANRW’18 particularly encourages the submission of results that could form the basis for future engineering work in the IETF, that could change operational Internet practices, that can help better specify Internet protocols, or that could influence further research and experimentation in the IRTF. ANRW ‘18 is sponsored by ACM SIGCOMM, the Internet Research Task Force (IRTF) and the Internet Society (ISOC).

ACM Conference on Information-Centric Networking 2018, Call for Papers
The 5th ACM conference on Information Centric Networking (ICN 2018) will be held in Boston, MA, USA, Friday through Sunday, September 21-23, 2018. We are inviting submissions that describe significant research contributions to ICN as broadly defined. The fundamental concept in Information Centric Networking (ICN) is to provide the ability to access named information as a principal service offered by the network, evolving the Internet from today’s host based packet delivery towards directly retrieving information objects and invoking services by name in a secure, resilient, scalable, and efficient way. These architectural design efforts aim to address the challenges that arise from the increasing demands from accessing cloud resources, from accelerated growth of mobile devices and edge computing, from wide deployment of Internet-of-things (IoT), and from the need to secure the global Internet. ACM ICN 2018 will be a single track conference focusing on current ICN research topics, featuring paper presentations, posters, and demonstrations. More details can be found at: https://conferences.sigcomm.org/acm-icn/2018/cf-papers.php
