CCR Author Information

Information for authors of papers appearing in Computer Communication Review: types of submissions accepted, the review process, implicit submission deadlines, public reviews, and manuscript specifications.

We will accept only those submissions that respect the formatting rules described below

(Revised September 2008)

Scope

Computer Communication Review (CCR) is a publication of the ACM Special Interest Group on Data Communication (SIGCOMM) and publishes articles on topics within the SIG's field of interest. CCR targets publication of papers that bring out interesting and novel ideas at an early stage in their development. The goal is to allow timely dissemination of new ideas or of works which might be useful to others, and that may help trigger additional investigations. CCR particularly encourages papers with early evaluation or feasibility study, as well as experimental and system papers. Papers submitted to CCR are reviewed for relevance and technical correctness. While the innovation and timeliness of a paper's content are the major criteria for its acceptance, technical robustness and readability will also be considered in the review process, as even the most original ideas or intriguing results are of little use if they are conveyed in an opaque manner.

Submission types

CCR accepts two types of submissions: technical papers and editorial notes. In broad terms, technical papers are carefully prepared presentations of technical material within the field, while editorial notes are shorter and less formal presentations on topics of broad interest to the research community. The scope for editorial contributions spans topics such as interviews of research scientists and industry leaders, editorials, conference reports, summary standards, NSF or European Commission user manuals, arguments on a research topic, outrageous opinion columns, timely tutorials, What's Worth Reading, and similar material. Emails from readers are also welcome. Authors considering submission of an editorial contribution are welcome to contact the Editor for feedback about its appropriateness, if desired.

Copyright

CCR allows authors to retain copyright of their submitted work. This is to encourage early submission of work to the community. Specifically, by submitting your article for distribution in this Special Interest Group publication, you grant to ACM the following non-exclusive, perpetual, worldwide rights: to publish in print on condition of acceptance by the editor, to digitize and post your article in the electronic version of this publication, to include the article in the ACM Digital Library, and to allow users to copy and distribute the article for noncommercial, educational or research purposes. However, as a contributing author, you retain copyright to your article and ACM will make every effort to refer requests for commercial use directly to you.

Publication of a paper in CCR does not preclude the later acceptance of a related paper to any workshop, conference, journal or magazine. Our expectation is that enhanced versions of the work would be submitted to other venues as appropriate. Prospective authors are cautioned that some venues are likely to require that the work be enhanced to a significant degree before being considered for acceptance.

Note that articles submitted to CCR should not be extension of previously published work, unless there is a new contribution in the paper. Articles not describing ongoing work or not containing new contribution do not match the objective of CCR.

Double-submission and Plagiarism

Articles submitted to CCR must not be submitted elsewhere, in accordance with ACM's double submission policy. We would also like to draw the attention of prospective authors to ACM's policy on plagiarism and self-plagiarism.

Review process

All CCR submissions will be reviewed by up to 3 reviewers. The review process is carried out under the responsibility of the editorial board. Papers will be either accepted or rejected. There will be no conditional accepts. When the review process suggests significant revisions, papers may be revised and resubmitted not earlier than 3 months after the rejection notification. Authors are allowed to appeal editorial decisions, but only if they feel that factual or technical mistakes were made during the review process. In such instances, they can submit a rebuttal of up to 300 words to the area editor in charge of the paper or to the Editor. The Editor will make every effort possible to ensure a fair handling of any such request as well as a prompt resolution and final editorial decision.

Instructions for submission of technical papers

Papers will be handled by one of the area editors. To be consistent with CCR's goal of timely publication, technical papers will typically go through a single round of reviews after which the editor responsible for the paper will make an editorial recommendation regarding the paper. There is an implicit submission deadline for each issue (however, papers can be submitted anytime). The target turn-around time for the review cycle is approximately 8 weeks from the submission deadline, so that accepted papers can normally be published in the issue of CCR following their submission deadline.

  • Paper submitted between the 2nd of December and the 1st of March will be considered for the July issue.
  • Paper submitted between the 2nd of March and the 1st of June will be considered for the October issue.
  • Paper submitted between the 2nd of June and the 1st of September will be considered for the January issue.
  • Paper submitted between the 2nd of September and the 1st of December will be considered for the April issue.

Authors will be required to send their camera ready paper 2 weeks after notification. Failure to meet this deadline will move a paper to the reject category. There will be NO exception in order to guarantee the timeliness of publication.

Accepted papers will be published together with a public review written by the paper's assigned area editor. The public review will provide some insight (based on the reviews and possibly an independent third party comment) of motivations for accepting the paper - pointing out the contributions and interesting aspects of the paper, mentioning perceived shortcomings, identifying broader issues raised by the work, etc. Authors of accepted papers will have the option to comment on the public review in a subsequent CCR issue. To exercise this option, authors may submit a comment of up to 500 words to the area editor in charge of the paper or to the Editor, who will jointly decide whether the comment can be published or not.

Papers accepted for publication are printed in CCR Newsletter and are also made available on-line through CCR Online and through the ACM Digital Library.

Format for technical papers

Technical papers submitted to CCR should conform to the following specifications:

  1. Manuscripts, once printed, should be single spaced (except for papers containing a great deal of mathematical notation; these should be prepared with as little additional line spacing as possible). They must be formatted at submission time with the ACM Sigcomm CCR template. Starting with the April 2009 issue, technical papers will be limited to 6 (six) pages. Exceptions to this rule may be permitted by the Editor if the circumstances so demand.
  2. Text width of about 16 cm (6.25 inches) and text length of about 23 cm (9 inches), with all margins (left, right, head and foot) of 2.5 cm (1 inch). Font size should be 9pt and follow the ACM Sigcomm CCR template.
  3. Papers should be formatted using US Letter.
  4. Please do not use graphs, charts, or figures that depend on color to be legible.
  5. Files larger than 4 MB (uncompressed pdf) will not be accepted.

Once accepted for publication, the authors MUST submit to the CCR Editor a PDF copy of their paper revised according to the recommendations made by the reviewers, together with a TXT file explaining how they have addressed the reviewers' comments.

The final version of the paper should comply with the "standard" format described on the ACM's page on SIG Proceedings style files. In particular, we insist on the following formatting points:

  1. No header or footer information (page numbers, names, report numbers, etc.) should appear on the pages.
  2. The title of the paper, name(s) of author(s), affiliation(s) and e-mail address(es) should appear on the first page (either at the top of the page or in a footnote). A short abstract of approximately 100 words should follow the title, names, and affiliations. Right after the abstract and before the introduction, there must be the mandatory ACM Computing Classification sections (Categories, General Terms and Keywords).

In addition to the paper, a file in text format containing the title of the paper, name(s) of author(s), affiliation(s) and e-mail address(es), paper abstract, and the ACM Computing Classification sections (Categories, General Terms and Keywords) MUST be submitted.

Instructions for submitting editorial notes

Editorial contributions will be published in a news-like section. Their scope is described above. Editorial contributions will be reviewed by an area editor, possibly but not necessarily in conjunction with outside reviewers. The timeline will be negotiated with the authors. However, editorial contributions submitted close enough to a deadline can generally be published in the following issue (i.e. less than 3 months after submission).

Format for editorial contributions

Editorial contribution should conform to the following specifications:

  1. Text width of about 16 cm (6.25 inches) and text length of about 23 cm (9 inches), with all margins (left, right, head and foot) of 2.5 cm (1 inch). Font size should be 9pt and follow the ACM Sigcomm CCR template.
  2. Papers should be formatted using US Letter.
  3. Files which size is above 2 Meg (uncompressed pdf) will not be accepted.
  4. Please do not use graphs, charts, or figures that depend on color to be legible.
  5. Submissions should not exceed six pages, unless permission is obtained in advance from the Editor.

The final version of the paper should comply with the "standard" format described on the ACM's page on SIG Proceedings style files. The final document should be submitted in PDF. Content formatting should include the following points:

  1. No header or footer information (page numbers, names, report numbers, etc.) should appear on the pages.
  2. The name(s) and address(es) of the author(s) must appear somewhere within the document, preferably on the first page. Otherwise, the contents of the document is free form, except that it should not normally exceed four (4) pages and should not contain excessive white space.

How to submit

Papers and Editorial notes must be submitted by email to ccr-editor @ uwaterloo.ca (remove spaces please).

Note that submission to CCR Newsletter and CCR Online are totally independent processes. If you want your document to be available on CCR Online, it must be uploaded separately on CCR Online. CCR encourages authors to upload their papers to CCR Online once they have submitted them to CCR Newsletter.

Submissions must be in PDF format only. Please use a common font and do not include printer specific commands. Authors are responsible for checking that their paper prints and reads in black and white, on a standard printer, using A4 and US letter paper.

Authors should send an email message with their paper and the following information (in txt format) to ccr-editor @ uwaterloo.ca (remove spaces please):

  • Title of the paper,
  • Authors of the paper,
  • Abstract,
  • The name and address of the corresponding author.
